Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, in Vilas Boas - It is the largest and one of the most important Marian sanctuaries of Trás-os-Montes. Built in the 19th century on top of a hill that dominates the entire surrounding landscape, it is one of the highest points in the municipality, with its 760 metres of altitude.
The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Assunção is also a top-quality viewpoint. Next to the veranda of the churchyard we are given a rare and vast panorama, covering the landscape of the neighbouring Sanabria, Montesinho, Bornes, and Mirandela, as well as all towns and villages within a radius of 100km.
Its history is millenary, as there was once here a hillfort on this magnificent mount, chosen for the perfect conditions to function as a lookout post. It has a single nave church and rectangular presbytery, several chapels scattered throughout the enclosure and a monumental staircase, all wrapped in huge tufts of forest.
