The gastronomic tradition of the Northeast Trás-os-Montes and Douro territories are highlighted in the Sopas e Merendas Festival, held in the village of Freixo de Espada à Cinta. The initiative aims to recover old soup recipes such as garlic, tomato, potato, based on green beans, and wild asparagus, and well as the traditional "berças", a dish based on cabbage, pies, and smoked products. In times of great agricultural work, soups were an ideal food to face a hard day's work, as they are rich from a caloric point of view. The wines produced in this territory of the Douro Demarcated Region also occupy a prominent place in the event, as the investment of new producers has been growing.
