On 18th May 1874, a man with a top hat came to Romeu from Porto on horseback, ready to buy land to build a farm. His name was Clemente Menéres. He then stopped at Maria Rita's inn and asked to be served codfish, which was accompanied, a first for him, by rye bread. In 1966 Manoel Menéres, his son, rebuilt Maria Rita on the same location as the original, employing his personal cook and using family recipes. It is in this historical place that a meal is proposed, made with products from Romeu, served with elegance by women from the surrounding villages in an environment steeped in memories. Maria Rita has a coherent heritage of aromas, flavours, people, and history: in short, a local culture woven of sensibilities and accumulated knowledge. This gives you a genuine, unique, and unrepeatable experience elsewhere in the world. Those who pass there do not forget and often get emotional. Maria Rita, Quinta do Romeu, and the Curiosities Museum belong to and are still managed by the Menéres family.
